Two Drowning Fatalities Recorded and Two Rescued Amid River Police Alert in Three Provinces

Security sources in the River Police reported on Friday (June 5, 2026) the drowning of two young men and the successful rescue of two others over the past few hours across three Iraqi provinces. In press statements, sources clarified that the first incident claimed the life of a young man in the Tigris River in Baghdad, while the second fatality occurred in the Zab River near Kirkuk. Meanwhile, rescue teams successfully saved two youths from drowning in the Nazim al-Sudour area of Diyala province. Authorities highlighted an alarming rise in drowning incidents recently in Nineveh, Dhi Qar, Diyala, and Saladin, prompting the River Police to declare a state of maximum alert. The rise in casualties coincides with an increase in citizens swimming in rivers to escape high temperatures, despite repeated warnings to adhere to safety guidelines.
