Scientific Study Warns of High Levels of Microplastics in Hot Tea

A recent study conducted by the University of Birmingham revealed potential health risks associated with the presence of microplastics in tea, one of the most widely consumed beverages globally. The study examined 150 types of hot and cold drinks, and the results showed that hot tea recorded high levels of these particles, reaching up to 60 particles per liter, equivalent to 12 to 15 particles per cup. Research indicated that high temperatures accelerate plastic degradation, warning that plastic-lined disposable cups and nylon tea bags significantly increase exposure compared to glass cups. Researchers noted that while long-term health effects are still under investigation, these particles have been linked to potential intestinal disorders and hormonal changes. They recommended using loose-leaf tea and paper bags to mitigate these risks.
