Political observers questioned the real reasons behind IRGC-Quds Force Commander Esmail Qaani's visit to Baghdad on Sunday (April 19, 2026), amid the delicate government formation process and escalating American pressure. According to Iraqi media reports, Qaani held a series of
meetings with Coordination Framework leaders and armed faction representatives, focusing on managing factional weapons and the repercussions of the regional war on Iraq. In notable statements, Qaani attacked "foreign interference" in Iraqi affairs, in a clear reference to the United
States, deepening the state of political polarization in the country. This visit is part of an active Iranian policy to maintain its influence in Iraq, with Qaani considered among the most frequent Iranian visitors to Iraq over the past six
years.
