Economic experts attribute this contradiction to the neglect that has plagued the palm sector and water scarcity, indicating that random importation and a lack of deterrent measures and national product protection threaten this vital sector. Conversely, relevant government authorities emphasize that importing dates is permanently banned, and imports are restricted to specific tissue culture offshoots to meet agricultural expansion plans and provide high-economic-value varieties in response to private sector expansion. Calls are mounting for the necessity of activating strict customs regulatory measures to prevent the flooding of the market with imported products, in support of Iraqi farmers.
