US Central Command Announces Launch of "Freedom Project" in Strait of Hormuz

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced today, Monday (May 4, 2026), the launch of the "Freedom Project" to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and the establishment of an "enhanced security zone" to facilitate the passage of commercial vessels.

The command indicated that this mission comes at the direction of President Donald Trump, aiming to support commercial ships seeking free passage through this vital international trade corridor, through which a quarter of global oil trade passes by sea, in addition to large quantities of fuel and fertilizers.

Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of US Central Command, stated that supporting this defensive mission is essential for regional security and the global economy, affirming the continuation of the naval blockade at the same time.

The command clarified that military support will include guided missile destroyers, more than 100 land and naval aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and 15,000 service members.
