The protection of archaeological and heritage sites in the capital, Baghdad, is at the forefront of local authorities' concerns, aiming to address the neglect and encroachments facing these cultural landmarks. Specialized committees have reached out to supreme government entities to
put an end to the violations, haphazard activities, and dumping of debris affecting historical sites, including undiscovered archaeological mounds and small heritage houses that have become surrounded by commercial, residential, and industrial projects threatening their existence. Local authorities have called
on relevant ministries to conduct a comprehensive field survey to resolve existing conflicts and to rehabilitate and protect these sites under a clear plan. This plan aims to highlight their cultural and tourism significance and transform them into a prominent
economic resource, emphasizing the importance of joint coordination and conducting precise inspections to advance the archaeological sector and prevent its extinction.
