The Ministry of Electricity announced on Friday (June 5, 2026) a substantial deficit between current power production and actual domestic demand, coinciding with the launch of a widespread campaign to remove violations on the national grid. An official Ministry statement
confirmed that directives have been issued to directly oversee the removal of illegal connections in Baghdad and other provinces in coordination with judicial authorities. The Ministry revealed that current production stands at approximately 20,000 MW, while actual demand exceeds 62,000
MW, noting that grid losses have surpassed 55% due to technical and administrative violations. The statement highlighted that the national grid has lost nearly 7,000 MW owing to recent regional events, urging citizens to cooperate with technical teams, settle their
dues, and install smart meters to ensure grid stability and improve supply hours.
