Dozens of farmers demonstrated in central Baghdad, raising nine demands they described as legitimate to enhance and support the agricultural sector, which is considered one of the largest sectors in attracting job opportunities in the country.
The most prominent demands included canceling the wheat pricing for 2026 to ensure fair treatment of farmers, expediting payment of farmers' dues for 2025, securing marketing funds for the current season, as well as disbursing compensation for damages resulting from accidents and floods.
The demands also included canceling arbitrary procedures related to the marketing file, including actually cultivated lands in a fair marketing plan, increasing agricultural yield in proportion to production costs, postponing loans and lifting lawsuits filed against farmers.
The demonstration organizer warned of continued protests in the absence of serious engagement with the demands, affirming that agriculture represents a fundamental pillar in the food security strategy and attracts no less than 50% of the workforce.
