The General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage warned on Friday (May 8, 2026) against the spread of inaccurate information via social media and media interviews that distort the scientific historical facts of Iraq's cultural heritage.
The authority explained in an official statement that it continuously monitors what is published on digital platforms, and has detected numerous interviews and posts that "include distortion of scientific historical facts without relying on reliable sources or referring to the competent authorities."
It indicated that the spread of this information "has begun to affect Iraq's civilizational heritage and distort the historical memory of both elites and the general public alike."
The authority called on public opinion to exercise caution when receiving information from these pages and to verify its accuracy before circulating it. It also urged activists and bloggers to cooperate in creating purposeful content that promotes cultural heritage with scientific rigor and credibility.
It requested media outlets to coordinate with the authority's media department to conduct interviews and programs with specialized scientific and artistic personalities from its staff, to ensure the accurate presentation of historical facts.
