Iran Accuses US of Politicizing Security Council to Support Illegal Measures

Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has accused the United States of using the Security Council as a political tool, in response to Washington's attempts to portray growing international support for a draft resolution against Tehran. The mission described these attempts as "ridiculous and deceptive" with purely political motives. In a statement, the mission affirmed that no amount of pressure and coercion by Washington can legitimize its unlawful international actions, including naval blockade, attacks, and the seizure of Iranian commercial ships and their crews in acts described as piracy. The mission noted that many countries joined the draft resolution under direct American pressure and threats, adding that the US representative's claims of broad support are merely a desperate attempt to pre-justify political objectives, undermine the Security Council's credibility, and provide political cover for illegal acts. These developments follow Washington's amendment of its draft resolution at the UN, which demands Tehran cease attacks and refrain from mining the Strait of Hormuz, by removing a clause referencing Chapter VII authorizing force, while retaining strict language threatening sanctions for non-compliance. Russia and China had previously vetoed an earlier US-backed draft resolution.
