Sony has announced a strategic decision to discontinue the production and sale of physical discs for all upcoming PlayStation games starting January 2028, transitioning entirely to digital distribution models. The company stated that future titles will be exclusively available via
its official digital storefront or through digital activation codes sold at retail outlets. Sony justified this milestone decision by pointing to shifting consumer behavior toward direct downloads and declining demand for traditional physical media, which will directly impact the used
games market. Concurrently, the tech giant unveiled plans to gradually phase out digital storefront support for legacy consoles, including the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, across global markets due to incompatibility with modern payment processing and security standards.
