An informed source revealed on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) the outlines of the understandings regarding the distribution of ministerial portfolios for the Kurdish component in the upcoming government, explaining that the position of Deputy Prime Minister will be the share of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Reconstruction and Housing.
The source added that the Ministry of Justice will be allocated to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, while the Ministry of Environment is expected to be its share as well, or within the final understandings that have not yet been fully resolved, noting that the New Generation Movement may obtain ministerial representation if it enters into understandings with the Patriotic Union, or a ministerial share may be granted to the three small parties whose total seats are about ten, through the selection of a single joint candidate.
The source continued that there are also discussions related to the possibility of involving forces such as the Kurdistan Islamic Union, the Position Party, and other Islamic parties in the distribution, according to the equation of political balances within the Kurdish house.
The talk about distributing ministries comes within the framework of political balances inside the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the two main parties have shared the political scene since the 1990s: Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and Jalal Talabani, founder of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
