Environmental Warnings: Around 500 Pollution Sources Devastate the Tigris River, Five Governorates Most Affected

rafidainscope - A local environmental observatory revealed on Sunday (August 23, 2026) that approximately 500 sources of pollution are threatening the Tigris River, warning of severe consequences for water and food security, as well as public health in the country. The observatory stated that the pollution stems from industrial and medical waste, alongside untreated sewage, noting the presence of 23 critical pollution hotspots in the capital, Baghdad, alone. Reports indicated that Baghdad, Basra, Wasit, Maysan, and Dhi Qar are the most affected governorates. The Diyala River is reportedly transferring massive amounts of heavy chemical pollutants into the Tigris, increasing the risk of chronic diseases amid declining water levels and deteriorating quality.
